The Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property group is charged with 3 primary responsibilities: - Managing UMB's intellectual property so as to provide the best protection possible with the resources available to our group. Important activities include:
- Training faculty and staff about key issues surrounding intellectual property.
- Assessing the marketability and patentability of UMB's technologies.
- Avoiding loss of rights because of public disclosure.
Preparing, filing and prosecuting patent, copyright and trademark applications.
- Licensing UMB's intellectual property to companies, organizations and other institutions to ensure rapid, broad dissemination of UMB's technologies for improving the quality of healthcare within Maryland, the United States and worldwide.
- Training and working with UMB faculty to actively market their inventions.
- Marketing UMB's technologies directly to companies.
- Negotiating and executing agreements including: confidentiality agreements, inter-institutional agreements, memoranda of understanding, options and licenses.
- Ensuring that the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) complies with all Federal and state requirements for the development and management of intellectual property (IP). Key considerations include:

- Department of Veteran's Affairs issues
- University of Maryland Medical System Patent Policy
- University of Maryland, Baltimore Patent Policy
