| | | | | | - UMB will not conduct human subjects research under arrangements involving financial incentives for productivity paid to UMB, its affiliate, UMB faculty, or research staff. Agreements and study budgets referring to financial incentives will not be approved by UMB nor its schools.
- A financial incentive for productivity is a monetary payment or other gift to UMB, a UMB affiliate (generally UMMS, VAMHSC, or BREF), or to an investigator, nurse coordinator, research coordinator, or other staff member employed by UMB or an affiliate, made upon meeting a productivity standard related to human subjects research. Examples:
- A payment of $500 sent to an investigator for each patient entered in a study within 90 days of study initiation.A gift certificate offered to nurse coordinators for every subject entered in a study beyond a minimum number, or for every subject who completes the study.
- A bonus of $5000, in addition to negotiated per subject componsation, to UMB when a specified number of patients have been enrolled in a study
- Payments of gifts which do not relate to productivity may be accepted by investigators and staff if the gifts are not related to productivity and are offered to all investigators and/or staff members, at all study sites, who are participating in a research study. Generally acceptable gifts will be meals or token gifts.
- Investigators and staff should not accept gifts of substantial value from a research sponsor under any circumstances, as this may appear to create a conflict of interest with respect to reporting of research results. Also, accepting a gift of substantial value from a research sponsor may create a State Ethics Law issue for investigators and staff who are University employees.
