Prepare to Route for Approvals

The routing process provides the reviewers with an opportunity to verify compliance with relevant university, State and Federal regulations, in addition to those of the sponsor.  Are you in compliance with the following?

Eligibility policy – If you are not a full-time UMB faculty member, this policy addresses your eligibility to be the Principal Investigator for a project.

Cost sharing and Over-salary-cap – This policy addresses sponsor salary caps, particularly that of the NIH, and any proposed cost share or matching.

Environmental Health and Safety issues – Policies and procedures include but are not limited to research that involves recombinant DNA or RNA, select agents, bloodborne pathogens, material of human origin including blood, tissue or cell culture, pathogenic microorganisms or toxins, radiation safety, toxic chemicals.

Clinical studies and study budget analysis – Procedures for required review of clinical study budgets for compliance with Medicare regulations, and procedures for routing, review and negotiation for proposals, awards and agreements

Institutional Review Board (IRB) – Policies and procedures address use of human subjects in research.

Animal Care and Use – Policies and procedures address use of animals in research.  This is the School of Medicine site but the Federal regulations are relevant campus-wide.  If you are not in the School of Medicine, please contact your IACUC as follows:

School of Dentistry: call 6-7169

School of Pharmacy: call 6-6868

Other Schools: Call Office of Research and Development for information at 6-6723

Conflict of Interest – Policies and regulations related to an investigator’s potential, actual or perceived conflict between university research activities and personal finances.

Intellectual property issues – This page points you in the right direction for assistance with an invention disclosure, copyright protection, proposed research with a new technology, and similar information.
