HOW: Routing for authorized signatures is required for all projects funded by a third party (not UMB) sponsor. Use Coeus to route the project. In Coeus, much of the institutional data will be automatically available. For hard copy applications, please use the institutional data reference to ensure that the addresses and key identifiers are correct for your application. WHEN AND WHAT: As a general rule, the project should be routed as a proposal, but the project agreement or award may be routed in some situations. All applications and proposals for new funding, continued funding (progress reports and renewals) and supplemental funding need to be routed. In addition to projects funded by a third party sponsor, agreements that propose the use of University resources, such as compassionate use clinical studies and government CRADAs, must also be routed for internal approvals even if no funding is provided by the other party. Letters of intent and pre-proposals need to be routed if they include an estimated budget and require institutional signature. WHY: The Principal Investigator is not authorized to sign a project agreement. An institutional authorized official will authorize submission of a proposal and/or accept an award or agreement on behalf of the university. Routing for authorized signatures documents required internal approvals for performance of the project if funded. The signature of the Principal Investigator (PI) is required for many application forms, requests to the sponsor, and other sponsored project documents. The PI, by signing the grant applications and initiating the internal routing, promises to perform the project and to follow the relevant rules and regulations for that project. The institutional official in the Office of Research and Development will provide the authorization to commit the university and its resources to the project. |
